  • Codes

Codes can be words, letters, figures, or symbols representing the meaning of something within a private purpose. 

  • Convention
Convention can be defined as the generally accepted way of doing something. That is usually used for a specific genre. 

  • Encode 
Encode is the way texts are combined as they're disassembled for their meaning may be used to analyze visual media. 

  • Decode
Decode can be understood to deliver the message and communicate with the audience. The audience may be able to understand the meaning of the media. 

  • Mise-en-scene
Mise-en-scene can be defined as the elements of cinema studies used in the film. 
  • Camera Shots

The transition between one scene to another scene
- Cross-cutting
Two stories line happened simultaneously
- Dissolve
Shot that overlaps the end of another
- Reverse shot
Two characters in the exact location that filmed separately with different camera techniques

- Diegetic Sound
Dialogues or sounds from a particular object visible in the scene can be heard by the audience.
- Non-Diegetic Sound
The sound that can build up a vibe in the location, this can be background music, mood music, and sound effects.

Meaning the "Dictionary definition."
  • Connotation
The associations or emotional suggestions related to certain words.

  • Media Language
The audience engagement feels within the media text or what the media can represent.

  • Desensitization 
When an audience is repeatedly exposed to shocking or violent content, that caused numbs the effect.

  • Passive audience
Accepting the messages encoded in the media text without any challenges makes them easier to be affected by the statements.

  • Active audience
Engages interprets and respond to the media text in different ways, able them to challenge the idea encoded in it. 

  • Preferred reading
The audience decodes the text exactly as the producer intended. As they have the ideological position

  • Negotiated reading
The audience understands the meaning and connotations of the text, causing them to reject particular elements.

  • Oppositional reading
The audience rejects the text's meaning. Audiences aren't engaged by the messages.

  • Diversion
A form of escapism from the stress and strain of everyday life. May all media fall into this group. Audiences consume media texts to escape from their daily lives. They choose entertaining readers that allow them to divert their attention from the real world, perhaps by watching a fantasy film. 

  • Personal identity
The media supplies us with role models and ways of understanding our own place in society. Some audiences like to watch or read media texts because they can compare their life experiences with those represented in them. 

  • Social relationships 
  1. People make a personal connection with the performers they see on the screen.
  2. People can build their own relationships discussing media with friends
  • Surveillance
People use the media to inform themself about the world around them. Keeping up to date with entertainment/fashion trends. 

  • Target audience
The success of a media product is determined by the audience; give what the audience demands as we get feedback from the audience to improve. Uses codes and conventions that the targeted audience will enjoy and engage with


  • Storyboard
A sequence of drawings, typically with some directions and dialogue, represents the shots planned for a movie or television production.

  • Genre
Categorizing media products is by grouping them together via their shared characteristics. These characteristics in media are known as codes and convictions. They're creating restrictions and developing templates for media producers to follow. 

  • Subgenre
Categorization of media a step further. It goes beyond the generalization of the genre. 

  • Genre Convention
Different elements are commonly found in a particular genre.
